On Thursday, the two chambers of the Indiana General Assembly convened in a “joint convention” to confirm the results of the election for governor and lieutenant governor, which was of course held on Nov. 5, 2024. The bit of ceremony preceded Monday’s inauguration of Gov.-elect Mike Braun and Lt. Gov.-elect Micah Beckwith.

According to Indiana State Code 3-12-5-5, “The house of representatives and the senate shall meet in joint convention not later than the date specified in Article 5, Section 9 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana for the commencement of the term of the governor and the lieutenant governor to hear the canvass of votes cast for governor and lieutenant governor. The joint convention shall act to resolve any: tie vote, as required under Article 5, Section 5 of the Constitution of the State of Indiana; or contest. …

“After resolving any tie or contest, the presiding officer of the joint convention shall certify to the convention that the individuals receiving the most votes according to the canvass have been elected governor and lieutenant governor.”

Members of the Senate walked across the hall and squeezed into the House chamber alongside their fellow lawmakers to hear the final tallies for votes cast in Indiana’s 92 counties before returning to normal business:

  • Republican Party: Mike Braun and Micah Beckwith, 1,566,080 votes

  • Democratic Party: Jennifer McCormick and Terry Goodin, 1,183,741 votes

  • Libertarian Party: Donald Rainwater and Tonya Hudson, 129,781 votes

  • Independent Candidate: Christopher Stried, 59 votes

Braun and Beckwith begin their four-year term Monday, with an inauguration ceremony held at 11 a.m. at Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis.
