The Indiana House voted to override Gov. Eric Holcomb’s veto of a bill barring local governments from regulating dealings between landlords and their tenants Wednesday afternoon. The override of Senate Enrolled Act 148 passed by a 67-32 vote and clears the way for the motion to become law.

The bill was vetoed in March 2020 by Holcomb, who said the  language in the bill was overly broad. The veto was overridden by the Senate on Feb. 8 in a 30-17 vote.

Rep. Doug Miller, R-Elkhart, the House sponsor of SEA 148, said two bills are in the works to repeal the language Holcomb claimed to be overly broad.

The override of the veto came after much debate. Democrats argued that the vetoed bill would heighten the state’s eviction crisis. Republicans said tenants had nothing to fear because landlords would be held responsible under other state and federal laws. Both Holcomb and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett came out with statements critical of the Senate’s veto override last week.
